Why is the character limit so low for wall posts? It's currently 140, which seems like a lot at first but even just posting a link to a post on the website (eg. https://mccentral.org/community/threads/ankhs-bug-report.1279/#post-3609) is already over half of that... And yes, I know that link shorteners are a thing, but I honestly don't want to have to use one every time I make a wall post with a link. Also people will think I'm using an IP logger lol Think we could possibly get it increased? EDIT: Also the character limit for posting a message on someone else's wall is 420, while posting one on your own wall limits you to 140. What's up with that? nice.
It's that way by default for Xenforo. I'll explain. On Xenforo, users are posting more of a "status update" than a wall post. Status updates are shorter because you're just updating someone on your status (think of Twitter) saying something like "Hey, I just got back from seeing Endgame. Thoughts?". But when it comes to a "post" you're implying that you're going to write something longer (think of Facebook). This is the system Xenforo models after on user profiles to share bits of information that's going on. Is the character count for status updates something that could be increased? Possibly. But it's not something I have really looked into. Not a bad idea though.
I did a quick Google search and from what I read, it is possible to increase the character limit for statuses. Personally, I don't mind the character limit as I'm used to it but if it does get increased, I don't think it should be a substantial increase to where people are able to write a small paragraph (4-5 sentences).
I'm not for or against increasing it. But in my post above, I explained what a "status update" implies. And that falls into a status update becoming too long when 4-5 sentences are created.
Also, because I just realized this, why is the character limit different for other peoples' walls? The character limit for posting a message on someone else's wall is 420.
A profile post you make on someone else's profile is not a status update, therefore it doesn't need to have the same constraints. @Ankh
Well, I spun up a demo instance of Xenforo and it looks like "420" is the default setting. Where did you see 120? Ignore this. I had Xenforo 1 and Xenforo 2 mixed up. Why would there be different constraints? They both fall under profile posts/comments because both types of content are viewable primarily on the profile page and user news feed.
Posting a message on your own wall has a 140 character limit, while posting a message on someone else's wall has a 420 character limit. Sorry for not clarifying, I'll update the thread .
Read my edit to that reply. Mixed things up. This is actually correct too. Here's a quote from Chris on the official Xenforo forums: https://xenforo.com/community/threads/profile-post-character-limit.80933/#post-810939 Was a bit confused on why you said that, but now it makes sense.
Are you asking if it made sense to me or to you? xDD I think the reason the limits are the way they are is they're trying to do it like Twitter. However, as I stated earlier it is possible to increase the limits.
Yeah, also did a bit of reading of my own into that thread and I guess now I know the specific reason as to why posts on your own wall are stuck at 140: Spoiler: Image I'll req for a thread lock.
No, it makes sense to me, worded that weirdly xD. But yes, I also mentioned that the character limit is to emulate Twitter as well. So your post basically sums that information up.
