/block is used to turn "ingredients" from your inventory into their block form. For example, if you have sufficient Iron Ingots, Gold Ingots, Diamonds, Lapis, etc. using /block will convert these items automatically into blocks (based on how many you possess). Fun fact: this also works with converting melon slices into melon blocks!
