(Please read fully before voting on the poll. I feel if the poll showcases alot of players wanting the change than it might actually happen) Don't get me wrong I get the idea, hackers can bypass IP bans with vpns so the next step is to ban vpns right? I disagree with that approach. The people who want to hack on your server can and will find work arounds, its not hard and im going to link a video that showcases how to bypass it in 2 minutes just so it gets my point across. () Balancing security and convenience is very important. you want to make the server as secure as possible but also dont want to ruin the convenience of the players. so when something is ruining the convenience of the players and also not stopping the issue you wanted to fix in the first place, maybe it's time to rethink the approach... "Why do you want to use a vpn in the first place?" now more than ever privacy is a issue, and il'd be shocked if atleast 50% of the people reading this don't use a vpn. while I'm sure the staff are very lovley people, I still do not want to give them infomation that could reveal more about me, call me over paranoid but an ip adress can lead into alot of personal details with little to no effort. so for the sake of making the players feel more secure why not just unblock it? you shouldn't punish your playerbase over a tiny minority, especially when the rulebreakers don't really face any consiquences at all.
Hey! It seems like you already answered your question: "Don't get me wrong I get the idea, hackers can bypass IP bans with vpns so the next step is to ban vpns right? I disagree with that approach." Vpns are in used to avoid any hackers to easily Ip-ban, of course, my-self I am aware that it's quite easy to bypass. "so for the sake of making the players feel more secure why not just unblock it? " If someone got your IP, then theirs not much they can do (unless its mega hacker), or unless they get your full information somehow. Type out some random numbers and you got your-self someone's Ip. Besides, MCC isn't a company that's gonna sell your IP to some hackers. It is more threatening to have your IP on some sketchy website instead of MCC. Speaking of privacy, IP addresses were never intended to accurately determine a location, they may be from 70% - 90% (still not 100%). If you are really worried then whenever you wish to play MCC, got to a near cafe with free wifi. Also why most of Hypixel players aren't so worried? They get 100k comparing to mcc 1k- 2k. Real life-world: The answer is pretty simple, if you're doing nothing illegal then your privacy is kept safe. However if you are doing illegal actions the government may look at your address, IP, and stuff to confirm or make actions. Same with MCC staff they look at your IP to see if you're doing anything illegal (salt), (ban-bypass), etc. VPN should stay. ~Cya!
I expected this reply just not so soon, I get using a vpn's is probaby not #1 priority but It's just my take on it. "If someone got your IP, then theirs not much they can do (unless its mega hacker)" This is incorrect. apart from the obvious ddos attacks there's actually a much more harmful attack called "banner grabbing" which is surprisingly easy to do. not going to go into the specifics for obvious reasons but it uses open ports to look through files and packets getting sent through it. this is especially dangerous within the minecraft community as I imagine a decent ammount of people have the port "25565" left open from when they tried to make mc server like 3years ago (this also applies to any other server) "Also why most of Hypixel players aren't so worried?" I've never actually had any issues connecting to hypixel with a vpn on. From the poll it seems my opinion is not the general consensus, so I quess a follow up question for me is: can I get in trouble for bypassing it and playing on the server with a proxy?
Never thought I would reply back (as i never do that) I think you missed the point. You are sort of complaining about VPN being a thing on MCC with privacy, also about the mega hacker part. Not sure if you understood me but to me it seems you didn't. Some people are capable of using your network as a source to hide, or send illegal stuff. However on MCC only srmod+ can view your ip, not like anyone can do /seen (yourname), and boom get your IP. However these hackers are over estimated, it's not a simple job or thing to do. Like I said at the start, this is MCC policy, they have a reason for this. (VPN to exist) ~Cya!
"You are sort of complaining about VPN being a thing on MCC with privacy" idk if this is a language barrier im not originally from england but I'm complaing about the exact oppisite. about not being able to use a vpn. I'm complaing about vpn blockers on the server but not the vpn's themselfs. "only srmod+ can view your ip" very aware, however I dont want to give them potentially personal and/or identifying infomation just because they have a high ranking, I know nothing about them so it makes sense why I and others would be cautious. "it's not a simple job" as said above one of the most harmful things is banner grabbing and that can be learned within say 10minutes with little to no technological knowledge.
VPNs do their best their best to mask and change your person. When it comes to using them, they certainly are good when going onto sketchy websites etc but when playing a Minecraft server they aren't really needed. Most people who use VPNs on Minecraft use it to bypass bans and such, so there's a reason if they aren't allowed. As far as them being able to be bypassed easily, it's a normal thing. Having VPNs not allowed on the network is a precaution that makes it harder for malicious people to access the network. Overall, I don't see why unblocking VPNs could help in any way, but not having them does pose a threat towards hackers and people trying to rejoin the network and ruin game experience for other players.
